Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid presented GMB live from New York this morning ITV

Good Morning Britain viewers have reacted to Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan's hosting duties on today's (9 November) programme live from Times Square, New York as America headed into the polls.

Reid, 45, said she was "impartial" about the vote earlier on in the show, but viewers claimed she looked close to tears when Donald Trump was named the next President of the United States.

Morgan's playful arch-rival Lord Sugar acknowledged the presenters' efforts on Twitter, posting: "Great coverage @piersmorgan and @susannareid100 Susanna is Piersy grovelling yet desperately trying to get Donny on the phone."

Other UK viewers chimed into the debate as Trump won the presidency, with many praising Reid and Morgan for their professionalism. One Twitter user wrote: "enjoyed your show this morning you managed to keep piers under control" while another put, "Refreshingly insightful objective coverage of the US elections – Well done GMB Auntie please note".

Many others took the opportunity to tease Morgan about his affinity with Trump, with another viewer writing: "piers is now an honorary american and has been appointed presidential hairpiece fluffer," as another wrote: "has @piersmorgan resigned yet to take up his press advisor role for Mr president".

During the show, Morgan referred to the night as "historic" and the pair were joined by Jerry Springer as the debate once again became heated following Tuesday's argument with author and political commentator Ann Coulter. Reid also referred to the results as a US-version of Brexit.

Trump sent shock waves across the world this morning when he swept to unprecedented victory in the US election – defeating his bitter rival Hillary Clinton after a dirty campaign. The 70-year-old demolished Clinton in key swing states including Florida, North Carolina and Ohio, in which he won 52.2% of the vote to her 43.3%. Trump has no political background and has never run for political office until he decided to enter the race for the Republican nomination in June 2015.
