Residents of Russia's Orekhovo-Zuyevo near Moscow reacted in shock on Tuesday (May 21) to a police shootout that Russian security services said was the successful thwarting of a potential terrorist attack on Russia's capital city.

Russian officials said that three militants planning a terrorist act on Moscow had been found living in a second story apartment in the Moscow suburb, Russian TV said, quoting a source at Russia's FSB intelligence service.

Police and security forces moved in on the building on Monday (May 20), closing off the surrounding neighbourhood in an operation that killed two of the militants, and ended in the arrest of one.

Residents said that the apartment where the suspected militants were found had been occupied by its current renters since March.

According to Russian intelligence reports, the militants were trained in Afghanistan or Pakistan.
