Overview

Newly crowned European champions Portugal will hope to make it a summer to remember by snatching the gold at Rio, but will have to overcome two-time champions Argentina in their opening encounter. The Albiceleste will still be hurting over their Copa America final loss to Chile, but the absence of the senior team stars will ease the burden on the young team, managed by new coach Julio Olarticoechea, who was appointed as the Olympic team's manager after the departure of Tata Martino.

Portugal will be managed by current U21 coach Rui Jorge, who has named a youthful squad with three over age players. Sergio Oliveira, Salvador Agra and André Martins have been invited to join the youngsters and all three are expected to start against Argentina.

The Albiceleste were the first team to qualify for Rio 2016, and are looking for their third gold after wins at Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008. They also have silver medals from the 1928 and 1996 games in Amsterdam and Atlanta respectively.

Argentina and Portugal faced each other at the 1996 Atlanta games, when the South Americans beat their European counterparts 2-0 in the semi-finals. The former finished as runners-up to Nigeria, while Portugal recorded their best-ever finish with a fourth placed finish after they lost 5-0 to Brazil in the fourth place match.
