Manchester United moved two points clear at the top of the Premier League after a 3-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford.

First half goals from Chris Smalling, Nani and Wayne Rooney were enough to ensure Sir Alex Ferguson's side extended their 100 per cent start to the season and move two points clear of Manchester City who were held to a 2-2 draw at Fulham.

Fernando Torres scored his first goal of the season with a well-taken finish at the start of the second half but missed an open goal in the 82nd minute after rounding United goalkeeper David de Gea, as Chelsea stumbled to their first defeat of the season.

Wayne Rooney missed a penalty mid-way through the second half after Jose Bosingwa had brought Nani down with the Portugal international through on goal.

"For neutrals it was a very open game," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "Usually it's a very tight affair with Chelsea but we gave the ball away so many times and they kept counter-attacking.

"Some of the football was fantastic but we were very careless."
