Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall attended a gala dinner on the eve of the abdication of Queen Beatrix at Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum.

Royal couples from Europe and beyond were invited to the occasion, following which she will officially pass the crown on to her son Prince Willem-Alexander.

Previously, the 75-year-old ruler thanked the Dutch people for their "heart-warming displays of affection" in a televised speech.

"Now that my oldest son is to take over this fine and responsible job tomorrow, it is my deep wish that the new royal couple will feel themselves supported by your loving trust," she said, "I am convinced that Willem-Alexander will apply himself with true devotion for everything a good king is obliged to do."

The monarch also paid tribute to her late husband, Prince Claus, who died in 2002.

"Prince Claus brought our House (Of Orange) closer to this time," she said, "Possibly history will show that the choice of this husband was my best decision."

Willem-Alexander's wife Princess Maxima, a former investment banker from Argentina, will be queen.

Queen Beatrix announced her intention to step aside in January after more than 33 years on the throne. She ascended to the throne in 1980, following the abdication of her mother Juliana at the age of 71-years-old.
