Overview

Nadal progressed into the quarterfinal of the 2014 Barcelona Open after beating Ivan Dodig in the third round on Thursday. The Spaniard defeated the 29-year-old Croatian, 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets, needing one hour and 24 minutes.

The 27-year-old is yet to lose a single match at the Barcelona Open since 2005 where he has been crowned the champion for a record eight times in his career. The World No 1 will now face his fellow compatriot Almagro in the last eight of the tournament.

Almagro booked his place in the quarterfinal after beating 11th seed Fernando Verdasco on Thursday. The sixth seed overcame his compatriot, 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets after playing for 73 minutes.

Nadal and Almagro had last faced each other in the final in 2013 where the former emerged triumphant.

Although the 13-time Grand Slam winner remains the favourite to win this tournament, he has suffered a slight dip in form in recent weeks. Almagro will be hoping to take advantage and avenge the defeat in last year's final.

The winner of this clash will face the winner of Saturday's semi-final between 26-year-old Colombian, Santiago Giraldo and 30-year-old German, Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Head-To-Head

Nadal holds a staggering 10-0 lead over Almagro in overall meetings. The duo have clashed four times in Grand Slam events where Nadal has prevailed over his compatriot all the time.
