Overview

World No 4 Nadal has not had the best of times in 2016, struggling with injuries and loss of form for most of the year. He has been struggling with a persistent wrist problem that led to a number of experts claiming that his career was over.

The Spaniard, though, looks fit in Beijing, thrashing Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and looked set to repeat the performance in the second round against Adrian Mannarino, eventually needing a tie-break to win the match 6-1, 7-6 (6). Nadal has won the title once in Beijing, in 2005.

Dimitrov has had a somewhat resurgent year following a nightmare 2015. The Bulgarian finished runner-up in Sydney and Istanbul and reached the semi-final of the Cincinnati Open. Dimitrov has lost all the seven matches he and Nadal have played together.
