Augsburg defender Ragnar Klavan will undergo his medical on Tuesday (19 July) to become Liverpool's latest summer signing. He was strongly linked to Anfield in the last few days and will complete his move to the Merseyside club this week.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the 30-year-old was expected to arrive in Liverpool on Monday (18 July) and is set to undergo his medical on Tuesday. The fee involved in the Estonian defender's transfer is around £4.2m ($5.5m).

The Anfield club take on Huddersfield Town in the next pre-season fixture on 21 July, after which the Reds will fly to the United States to take part in the International Champions Cup. Their first fixture is on 28 July and Liverpool are keen on completing Klavan's deal before their upcoming trip.

Jurgen Klopp wants to strengthen his side's central defending position after allowing Kolo Toure leave the club as a free agent and Martin Skrtel join Fenerbahce. In addition to this, the former Borussia Dortmund manager has injury concerns to his first choice centre-back Mamadou Sakho is set to be out of action for a month due to an Achilles problem.

The France international has joined Joe Gomez in the treatment room as the England Under21 international suffered another setback. The former Charlton Athletic man is set to miss the start of the 2016/17 season after he damaged his Achilles tendon.

Liverpool manager is left with Dejan Lovren and summer addition Joel Matip as the only two first choice defenders in the squad. The Cameroonian international also limped off in the Reds' pre-season win over Wigan Athletic, but Klopp has played down any injury fears.

Klopp has watched Klavan in action in the Bundesliga when he was the manager at the Signal Iduna Park. The German manager had two more opportunities to watch him in action last season when Liverpool faced Augsburg in the last 32 of the Europa League.

The Premier League club have already added four new faces to the club, following the arrival of Loris Karius, Sadio Mane, Marko Grujic and Joel Matip. The deals for the latter two were agreed earlier this year and Klavan will become Liverpool's fifth new arrival of this summer.
