Two bodies have been recovered from the River Tyne in Northumberland after three kayakers went missing.

Search and rescue crews continue to look for the third man believed to be part of the group from South Shields that failed to return after going kayaking in Hexham on Sunday.

A body was found in the river at Riding Mill and a second in the Corbridge area.

Police were informed at 11pm the men had gone missing and located one of their vehicles at Tyne Green, near Hexham Rowing Club just before 1.15am on Monday. A second vehicle was found a few hours later at Wylam train station car park.

Formal identification of the bodies is yet to take place.

Superintendent Steve Howes, from Northumberland Area Command, said: "Our searches of the area are continuing today with assistance from the HM Coastguard and RAF Boulmer."

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
