Overview

Roger Federer comes into this match following an easy victory over Marinko Matosevic, whom he beat 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 to reach the second round of the US Open. The Swiss No 1 is looking to win his sixth US Open title. His last victory came way back in 2008.

That was a period when Federer was the king of Flushing Meadows, having won five straight titles from 2004-08. He has struggled since, and last year, he was knocked out in the fourth round by Spaniard Tommy Robredo.

Meanwhile, his opponent in the second round is 26-year-old Sam Groth from Autralia. Groth is ranked 104 in the world and is making his first appearance at the US Open. It is also the first time he is facing Federer.

That could be an advantage for the young Aussie, and he will at least hope to take the fight to Federer in this second round encounter.
