Rooting Wi-Fi/3G Variants of Nexus 7 Using CF-Auto-Root [How to]

Senior XDA developer, Chainfire, has released the popular rooting tools for Samsung devices knows as CF-Auto-Root for both Wi-Fi and 3G variants of Google's 7in Nexus-branded tablet manufactured by ASUS.

As the developer notes, "CF-Root is the root for beginners and those who want to keep as close to stock as possible. CF-Root is meant to be used in combination with stock firmwares and be the quickest and easiest way for your first root."

The Nexus 7 users, who are looking to root their device using the CF-Auto-Root, may follow the tutorial below. IBTimes UK reminds its readers that it will not be responsible for any damage to the device during the procedure. Users are also advised not to use the root packages for any other variants, since the root files are compatible only with international Wi-Fi and 3G models of Nexus 7. The most important thing is if the tablet had not been unlocked before, this procedure will wipe everything.

Pre-requisite

1) Download USB drivers for Nexus 7 and enable USB debugging mode.

2) Create back-up for all your important data.

3) Ensure that the battery of the tablet is charged more than 80 percent.

4) Your Nexus 7 should be factory unlocked.

Steps to root Nexus 7 Wi-Fi/3G model with CF-Auto-Root

1) Download and install Android SDK from the official site. This will install the necessary drivers for the tablet on your computer

Note: Remember that even though the storage of your Nexus 7 shows up on the computer when you connect it, the Android SDK drivers are separated and are required for rooting.

2) Download the CF-Auto-Root package [Root file link for Wi-Fi version/ for 3G version]. Click here for alternative link

3) Extract the contents of the CF-Auto-Root file on your computer

4) Switch off your Nexus 7 and then boot into fastboot mode by holding the Volume Down and Power buttons together until the screen turns on and shows 'Start' written in bold letters

5) Plug in your Nexus 7 to the computer using the USB cable and wait for Windows to finish installing the drivers

6) Browse to the folder where you have extracted the CF-Auto-Root files. Double-click on the 'root windows' file to start up the root programme

7) Ensure that you have created backup for all your important data. Now press any key to start the rooting process

8) The tablet will reboot and show a red Android logo while it is being rooted. Once the action is completed, the tablet will boot up

Note: Once the tablet is rooted, verify with an app called 'SuperSU,' which allows to grant root access to any app that asks for root. In case the app is not visible in your app list which means it was not installed during the rooting procedure. In such situation, just install SuerSU from the Play Store.

Your Google Nexus 7 Wi-Fi/3G version is now rooted successfully using CF-Auto-Root.
