Rory McIlroy proved he wasn't just an ace on the golf scene but could also handle himself on the tennis court after taking over from lover Caroline Wozniacki playing a point against Maria Sharapova.

After a dance contest during the exhibition match between the two tennis heavyweights, the girls forgot about point-scoring and Wozniacki allowed beau McIlroy to take over.

If that wasn't surprising enough, the world golfing No 1 then won the point against the Grand Slam tennis champion.

McIlroy was there to watch his Danish girlfriend play in the friendly match with Russian ex-world number one Sharapova.

The Northern Irish golfer tweeted about how pleased he was with his efforts.

He said: "Never thought I'd play tennis at Madison square garden!! Had a great time watching @CaroWozniacki and Maria out there! I even won a point!"

McIlroy was recently crowned the world's number one after beating Tiger Woods in the Honda Classic tournament in Florida.

He is now the second youngest player to have been champion after Woods himself.

His tennis exploits didn't help out Wozniacki. She slumped to a 6-3, 6-4 defeat.
