Samsung Galaxy S3 Vs Sony Xperia Acro S: Can Sony's Newest Outshine S3 with 12MP camera and Dual-Core Processor?

Sony has announced two new smartphone models in the Xperia series - the Xperia go and the Xperia acro S; the latter features a larger display, higher resolution camera and a more powerful battery.

The announcement also states both phones are water resistant and will have scratch-resistant mineral glass display for protection against dust and water. The smartphones allow for easy connectivity and the sharing of content on television, laptops and tablets, as well as other smartphones.

The smartphones will hit the global market from the third quarter onwards.

Display

The newly announced Xperia Acro S will feature 4.3in HD Reality display powered by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine. The display is protected by scratch-resistant shatter proof glass and is also dust and water proof. The resolution of the display is 720x1280 pixels with a pixel density of 342 pixels per inch (ppi).

The Galaxy S3 features a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 2. The display has Samsung's TouchWiz User Interface v4.0 and the resolution of the display is similar to the Acro S at 720x1280 pixels with a density of 306 ppi.

Dimension

The Xperia Acro S measures 126x66x11.9mm and weighs 147g while the Galaxy S3 measures 136.6x70.6x8.6mm and weighs slightly less at 133g.

Operating System

The Xperia Acro S and the Galaxy S3 both run on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

Processor

The Xperia Acro S will be powered by a Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon dual-core Scorpion processor clocked at 1.5GHz. The Galaxy S3 is powered by the Exynos 4 quad-core processor, clocked at 1.4GHz. Both smartphones have 1GB of RAM.

Camera

The Xperia Acro S will be equipped with a 12 megapixel rear-facing camera with auto-focus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch-focus, face and smile detection, 3D sweep panorama and image stabilisation. The camera can capture video in 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps) with continuous auto-focus, video light and video stabiliser. The handset will also feature a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera which can capture video in 720p at 30 fps.

The Galaxy S3 is equipped with a rear camera of eight megapixels with auto-focus, LED flash and other features such as simultaneous HD video and image recording, geo-tagging, touch-focus, face and smile detection and image stabilisation. The camera can record video in 1080p at 30 fps, the same as the Xperia Acro S. Samsung's S3 packs a front-facing camera of 1.9 megapixels, which can record video in 720p at 30 fps.

Connectivity

The Xperia Acro S will offer Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth version 2.1 with A2DP and EDR and it also supports Near Field Communication (NFC). It will support data speed up to HSDPA 14.4 Mbps and HSUPA 5.8 Mbps.

The Galaxy S3 offers Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi HT40, NFC and Bluetooth v4.0. It supports data speeds up to HSDPA 21Mbps and HSUPA 5.76 Mbps and can connect to 4G networks.

Storage

The Xperia Acro S will offer 16GB of storage space and will have a microSD card slot which can support additional memory up to 32GB.

The S3 has two models - 16/32GB, with a 64GB model expected to be available soon. The smartphone also supports microSD slots.

Battery

The Xperia Acro S will be powered by a Li-ion 1910mAh battery which is expected to deliver talk time up to six hours and 40 minutes in 2G and seven hours and 10 minutes in 3G.

The Galaxy S3 has a larger 2100mAh battery and delivers talk time of up to 21 hour and 40 minutes in 2G and an impressive 11 hours and 40 minutes in 3G.
