LG announced its first quad-core smartphone in February, equipped with an Nvidia Tegra 3 unit and a HD IPS display. The LG Optimus 4X HD is scheduled to hit the Europe smartphone markets in the second quarter of the year.

The expected launch of Samsung's next-generation Galaxy smartphone, believed to be named the Galaxy S3 is now only a few days away and the rumours surrounding possible specifications continue to rise.

Check out how the two stack up

Display: The Samsung Galaxy S3 is expected to have a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display, according to a leaked service manual obtained by Sammobile. However there were earlier reports suggesting the display could be a 4.6-inch screen with a resolution of 720x1184 pixels. In either case, the phone is expected to feature a physical "Home" button and a five column User Interface (UI).

LG's phone will feature a 4.7-inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen which will have a resolution of 720x1280 pixels.

Dimensions: There is not much information about the S3's size except for its probably being thinner and slightly heavier, according to an earlier IBTimes UK report.

The LG Optimus 4X HD is 8.9mm thick and weighs 158.75g.

Operating System: Both smartphones will run on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)

Processor: Samsung has confirmed the S3 will be powered by a 1.4GHz Exynos 4 quad-core processor, which, according to details in an earlier IBTimes UK report consumes 20 percent less power than its predecessor. The company reportedly intends to release the Galaxy S3 with different specifications for different markets. For example, the US variant could pack Qualcomm's dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor. However, the leaked service manual states the Galaxy S3 will be powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core CPU.

The LG will be powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and will pack 1GB of RAM.

Camera: The Galaxy S3 will sport a primary camera of eight megapixels, with auto-focus and LED flash and be capable of capturing video at 1080p.

The LG has an eight megapixel BSI sensor camera and a secondary front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera.

Connectivity: The Galaxy S3 will offer Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth version 4.0 and it will also support data speed up to HSPA+21Mbps and HSUPA 5.76Mbps.

The LG Optimus 4X HD will offer 3G connectivity and Bluetooth version 4.0.

Storage: The S3 will have 16GB of onboard memory, as does the LG Optimus. Both devices will support a microSD card.

Battery: The Galaxy S3 will carry a 2050mAh battery. The LG Optimus 4X HD will be powered by a battery of 2,150mAh.
