Overview

Defending champion Serena Williams seems to be out of form and is probably not playing the tennis she is capable of, but such is her power and skill that it has not mattered whether she is at her best or not to advance in the tournament. She comes into this clash with wins over Annika Beck and Svetlana Kuznetsova and is the definite favourite to win the title and equal Steffi Graf's record of 22 Grand Slam titles.

Kuznetsova, who is seeded 13th was expected to give her a fight considering she has already beaten the American earlier in the year. However, the world number one cruised past her opponent, beating her 7-5, 6-0, hitting a whooping 43 winners with just 14 unforced errors. Williams also won eight 12 net points and converted six out of 10 break points.

The American, who has struggled with injuries and illness this season has not yet hit top gear and if she does, it will be a treat to watch for the fans at SW19.

On the other hand Pavlyuchenko reached the final eight of the Wimbledon Championships for the first time in her career after beating 27 seed Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-3 in the previous round. While she does not have a CV as impressive as that of her opponent, the Russian's powerful game is a fine fit on grass and with Williams traditionally struggling against lower-ranked opposition in the latter rounds of majors, this might just be her chance to cause an upset.
