Defending champion Serena Williams had to work hard to reach the semi-final of the competition, coming from the brink of elimination, but managed to defeat Yulia Putintseva 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter-final on Thursday.

Williams is a three-time French Open winner and if she wins the title this year, she will claim her 22<sup>nd Grand Slam title, equalling Steffi Graf's open era record. It has been a tough 2016 for the World Number one, with numerous injuries and illnesses limiting her participation in tournaments and with the Olympics coming up, she will want to go into the tournament in good form.

On the other hand, it has been a fairy tale run in the competition for her opponent Kiki Bertens, who was ranked outside the top 100 at the start. She has been impressive and has moved to the 58th spot in world rankings.

The worry for Bertens will be the calf injury she sustained during her quarter-final win over Timea Bacsinszky, where she had to seek a medical timeout and resumed play with here lower leg swathed in tape. She has had no rest day to recover for the semi-finals and this could leave her with a serious disadvantage against her opponent.
