A teenage girl, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by two youths, attempted to kill herself after the accused shared a video of the act with others. The 17-year-old grade 12 student from Shamli district in India's Uttar Pradesh state is in a critical condition with 80% burns, the Indian Express newspaper reported.

The victim's mother filed a complaint with local police on Thursday 17 August stating that her daughter was sexually assaulted by two youths around two weeks beforehand. The accused men had also recorded a video of the heinous act and then shared it with others.

Police have reportedly charged the two accused, identified as Akash Kaushik (20) and Shubham (20), with attempt to rape and abetment to suicide. However, arrests were yet to be made.

"The girl's mother has alleged that Akash and Shubham had lured her daughter to accompany them to a hotel. They allegedly attempted to rape her there and also shot a video and clicked objectionable photographs of her," Raj Kumar Sharma, a police officer from the local station, reportedly said.

"She alleged that since then, the accused were harassing her daughter by threatening to upload the video and photographs on the Internet," he added.

The mother told police the girl poured kerosene and set herself ablaze at their Adarsh Mandi house in Shamli district in order to avoid further harassment.
