Where to watch live

Halep v Makarova gets underway on Tuesday 27 January at 12.00am GMT. Live coverage will again be available through British Eurosport for UK viewers, while live updates will also be available through the Australian Open's official website.

Overview

Third seed Simona Halep progressed into the quarter-finals on Sunday 25 January with a hard-fought victory over Belgian Yanina Wickmayer. The Romanian was made to work for her 6-4 6-2 victory over her unseeded opponent but did enough to ensure she replicated last year's feat of reaching the final eight.

In 2014, Halep was ruthlessly crushed 6-3 6-0 by Dominika Cibulkova at the same stage but in following final and semi-final appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon later that year, the 23-year-old will feel confident of securing a place in the final four.

Meanwhile 10th seed Makarova cruised into the last eight in emphatic fashion after she dispatched of Germany's Julia Goerges inside 70 minutes to seal a 6-3 6-2 win in her last match. It is her third consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final appearance and the 26-year-old Russian will be looking to extend her impressive record in Australia having reached this stage in three of the last four competitions, having also dumped Serena Williams out of the tournament in 2012.

What they said

Simona Halep: "I have experience now, I have confidence. Last year I made the quarter-finals here and I'm happy to again show my best tennis.

"I have confidence I can beat her again but it's a quarter-finals and it will be a tough match."

Ekaterina Makarova: "I was already feeling more and more confident during the US Open. I'm feeling like I did then. It's quite the same feeling.

"Well, we played once in New Haven I think, not last year, but the year before.

"I lost 6-1, 7-6 in that match, something like that. She's one of the greatest players right now, and I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully I can keep moving forward step by step."
