Overview

After India gained the impetus on day one at the Wanderers, Philander went about restoring some parity for the hosts on the second day. The seamer claimed three wickets in the morning session to dismiss India for 280, having started the day 255-5. India's momentum was brought to a halt when skipper MS Dhoni was caught behind AB de Villiers, having added just two runs to his overnight score.

His opening partner Ajinkya Rahane soon followed as things worsened for the tourists. Philander found Rahane's edge before the South African caught the evergreen Zaheer Khan lbw to tie up two swift wickets in two balls. Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami were not far behind as India went all out for 280 with Philander racking up an impressive afternoon haul of 4-61.

At the crease the home side quickly reached 130-1 through Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla, before the latter was caught by Sharma after tea. It was the first of a flurry of wickets that rattled the Proteas, however, as Jacques Kallis and Smith swiftly followed as they failed to score a single run in three successive wickets.

Faf du Plessis and Philander steadied the ship soon after as the latter took South Africa beyond 200. The duo survived the day and will resume day three just 67 runs behind India with four wickets remaining.
