A man in South Dakota has been arrested after he ran into a burning building twice in order to save a couple of cans of beer inside.

Emergency services were called to a fire at address in Spring Avenue, Sioux Falls on the afternoon of 23 April. The fire, which is being investigating, resulted in two people being treated for smoke inhalation, with a third taken to hospital.

Elsewhere, Sioux Falls Police said a man was arrested at the scene for barging past the emergency services team in order to run inside the house to "save his beer".

According to Public Information Officer Sam Clemens, 56-year-old Michael Casteel ignored police instructions and ran inside the building.

He then came out and returned once more back inside, again disregarding instructions from officers.

When Casteel came out for a second time, he was holding two cans of Bud Ice. The incident resulted in police advising people that beer is "not worth your life" on social media.

"This incredibly poor judgement could have put many responders at risk," the department added.

Casteel was arrested for obstructing firefighters and violating the 24/7 sobriety program, reported Keloland.
