Overview

Sri Lanka will be looking to seal the series with a win over a struggling England side and gain momentum ahead of the Cricket World Cup scheduled in Australia in February 2015. The hosts have won three of their last four games, with England having to do with a solitary win in a rain-curbed game which was eventually decided by the Duckworth Lewis method.

England won the toss and elected to bat on a seaming pitch and the Sri Lankan bowlers used the conditions to the maximum, stifling the England batsmen, who managed only 46 runs in the first 10 overs.

However, an inspired performance from Eoin Morgan and James Taylor saw England through to a respectable total of 265 and it was up to their bowlers to keep the hosts at bay.

The bowlers managed to check the opening partnership but were undone by a brilliant 86 from Kumar Sangakkara in the buildup as Angelo Matthews provided the finishing touch and pulled Sri Lanka over the edge with two balls to spare.

The visitors have to win the remaining three games in order to win the series, something which looks unlikely given their level of performance.
