A man was arrested after racist tweets were sent to football pundit Stan Collymore.
Radio presenter Collymore, a football commentator and pundit at commercial station TalkSport, has been the target of Twitter trolls before.
Police held a 21-year-old man in Northumbria after a complaint was made about the abuse.
A spokesman said: "A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of publishing written material to stir up racial hatred and is currently in police custody helping police with their inquiries."
Collymore, who has 350,000 followers, took to the micro-blogging site to hail the response.
