Overview

World Number three Stan Wawrinka has not had the best of tournaments by his standards but has still managed to reach the last eight of the ongoing 2016 US Open. He comes into this clash after beating Illya Marchenko in the fourth round.

He struck eight aces to zero double faults against the Ukranian while also overbalancing 41 unforced errors with 49 winners. It has been his performance in key moments that has helped him win matches, but he will need to play at a superior level to reach the semi-final come September 8.

Juan Martin Del Potro's golden run in tennis has continued at Flushing Meadows, where he finds himself in the last eight despite having a world ranking of 142. The Argentinian, who won the silver medal at the recently concluded Rio 2016 Olympic games, beating Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the process is still recovering from the horrific wrist injury which has limited his game when compared to the ability and talent he has.

The 27-year-old will take confidence from the fact that injury or no, he was been victorious the last four times that the duo have met in both Grand Slam and ATP Tour events. Despite del Potro being uncomfortable with his wrist, he has shown a never die spirit that makes him the favourite going into this clash.
