Princess Leia and Han Solo

In the latest addition of the Star Wars comics, the iconic saga crosses over into soap-opera territory as it is revealed that Han Solo had a wife during the time he was falling for Princess Leia in both the literary and cinematic universes.

Taking place between movies A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the issue depicts Solo and Leia being confronted by Han's secret spouse in Tatooine. Pointing a gun towards Leia and sporting a less-than-welcoming attitude, his other half reveals her identity by saying: "He'd just lie, that's the only thing he's good at. I should know. The name is Sana Solo. I'm his wife... Now who in the hell might you be, lady?"

A bold statement to which Solo can only respond by putting his head in his hands and saying "oh no", while Leia demonstrates her dismay by ignoring Sana's question and simply uttering: "Wife?"

Now, Star Wars fans can rest easy in the knowledge that at least within the movie world, it is Solo and Leia that end up together. Hard-core fans of the series can be even more reassured considering the fact the pair actually get married in Dave Wolverton's 1995 book The Courtship Of Princess Leia, part of the Star Wars expanded universe, and go on to have three children.

But it's still pretty shocking to passionate shippers of the couple to find out that the 'scoundrel' might have been two-timing the princess of Alderaan on the sly.

Since Disney took over Marvel Comics in 2009 and acquired the rights to Lucasfilm three years later, therefore inheriting the franchise in literature form too, the comic books have become accepted as the genuine source of stories surrounding the characters written by George Lucas. The former production company suggests that all other written material in the Star Wars universe would be nothing more than fan fiction.

The eagerly-awaited Episode VII in the Star Wars movie history, entitled The Force Awakens, is set to be released in December this year with both Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher reprising their roles as Solo and Princess Leia. The setting will be 30 years after the events in the last film in which Ford and Fisher portrayed their characters; The Return Of The Jedi.

Something tells us Sana won't be making an appearance though...
