Grime star Stormzy stole the show at the 2017 MTV EMAs with his flawless performance of Big For Your Boots before taking home the award for Best UK and Ireland Act, but unknown to viewers at home his night got off to a very dramatic start.

The Gang, Signs and Prayer hitmaker reached out to fans on social media after getting awkwardly trapped in the ladies toilets at the annual ceremony, moments before he was due to take to the stage.

The 24-year-old had headed into the toilets thinking it was the gents and was too afraid to face a crowded loo after realising the embarrassing gaffe.

Sharing a picture of himself inside a cubicle on Snapchat, he wrote: "Came to buss a sh*t but accidentally went in the girl's toilets so I can hear bare girls outside but if I pop out now imma look mad creepy."

With the help of a friend he quickly concocted a plan of escape and narrowly avoided running into pop star Anne-Marie, who was brushing her teeth.

He later expressed his gratitude by posting a screenshot of his conversation with the friend who gave him the green light when the coast was clear so he could sneak out. The caption simply read: "Fam."

The south London-based artiste managed to get out in time for his performance at the SSE Arena Wembley, which saw him enter the stage in a police car. For the set, he donned a red tracksuit.

He continued to keep fans updated throughout the event by sharing pictures and videos from backstage including his impromptu skateboarding session with One Direction star Liam Payne.
