Two suicide bombers in Afghanistan have killed 22 people and injured at least 50 others. They struck outside the airport in the city of Kandahar just as four regional governers were meeting at the nearby NATO base.

According to police chiefs, the first attacker rode a 3-wheeled motorbike packed with explosives into a car park just as other drivers were queuing to get in there. Then - when crowds flocked around to see what had happened and help those who were injured - a second bomber walked into them. The explosion wreaked havoc on three nearby shop buildings: apparently 8 private security guards were among the 22 who were killed. The nearest hospital is now overloaded with scores more injured civilians – the figures at the moment standing at around 50 people.
