American supermodel Kendra Spears is set to become a princess after getting engaged to Prince Rahim Aga Khan, the eldest son of His Highness Aga Khan.

The 24-year-old beauty - who has been dubbed the next Cindy Crawford, thanks to her upper lip mole - will marry the 41-year-old royal in a Muslim ceremony later this year, according to a statement from the Aga Khan Network.

A spokesperson person for his Highness, who is the spiritual leader of the world's Shia Ismaili Muslims, said he was "delighted" about his son's imminent nuptials.

Seattle-born Spears earned her BA in Sociology from the University of Washington before making her catwalk debut in September 2008 during New York Fashion Week.

She has since has appeared in campaigns for Diane von Furstenberg and Prada, and walked the catwalk for Calvin Klein, Chanel, Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent and Givenchy, among many others.

Spears took to Twitter to thank well-wishers after her page was inundated with congratulatory messages.

"Thank you all for the kind tweets! We're very excited!" she told her 7200 followers.

Spears is set to convert to Islam ahead of the ceremony.

Her future husband, who studied in the U.S. at Brown University and at the Navarra Business School in Barcelona, Spain, will be following in the footsteps of his younger brother, who also married an American model.

Prince Hussain, 39, wed New York professor's daughter Kristin White in 2006 in a fairytale ceremony at a 14th century chateau outside of Paris. White converted to Islam and adopted the name Khaliya.
