A Taiwanese student has been charged with animal abuse after posting the above picture of her cat stuffed in a jar on Facebook.

Kiki Lin caused outrage with the photo before claiming that she decided to stuff the cat into a jar as a "punishment for misbehaving".

The photo shows the cat with its face squeezed against the sides of the container.

The image then began to circulate online which led to Taichung district police charging Lin with violations against the Animal Protection Law.

Lin refused to apologise.

"I only have three words for them, ha ha ha," she told the China Post.

"I really don't see how it is their place to criticise me without even knowing what happened. They have too much time on their hands."

Lin then claimed that she put the cat into the container to test out different methods of taking the cat out.

"I love her so much, and I was just testing out the most convenient method of taking her out. And I only did it once."

If found guilty, Lin could face up to one year in prison or a hefty fine.

The cat survived.
