A man has been charged with the attempted rape of an elderly pensioner in Salford, Greater Manchester.

Sam Rimmer, 19, of Irlam, is due to appear before Salford Magistrates' Court charged with attempted rape, section 18 assault and sexual assault by penetration after a woman in her eighties was attacked in the early hours of 9 November.

Police were called to an address in Irlam at around 2am to a report of a sexual assault. The victim is currently being supported by specially trained officers.

Police reassured local residents this is considered an isolated incident.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "There are extra patrols in the area to reassure the community and if anyone has any concerns please speak to your local neighbourhood team or call police on 101."
