British film director Tony Scott did commit suicide when he jumped from the Los Angeles suspension bridge, but he did not have cancer, according to an LA county coroner.

A preliminary autopsy revealed that the 68-year-old had anti-depressant Mirtazapine and the prescription sleep-aid Lunesta in his system when he killed himself.

Early reports had suggested that Scott had been diagnosed with ineoprable brain cancer prior to his death, but the coroner said he was not suffering from any serious illness when he committed suicide.

Tony Scott, the younger brother of fellow filmmaker Ridley, was known for highly kinetic action movies such as Top Gun and Days of Thunder. Often seen around Hollywood sporting his iconic red baseball cap, his sudden death shocked and saddened many in the film industry.

The motive for Scott's suicide is still unknown. A coroner's spokesman said a final report will be available in two weeks' time.
