Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has agreed a new five-year deal with the north London club and will remain at White Hart Lane until at least 2020. The England U21 international joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon last summer.

"We are delighted to announce that Eric Dier has signed a new contract with the club which will run until 2020," a statement on Spurs' official site read. Dier came into the Premier League as an unknown, but he has gone on to impress during his first season at the club, and despite his tender age, made 36 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham last season. The former Sporting defender even scored on his debut, when he netted a late winner against West Ham United on the opening day of last season.

The 21-year-old central defender, who can operate even as a right-back, has expressed his delight after extending his deal with the north London club. He is confident that the club is on the right path and with the help of a young team and the prospect of moving into a new stadium, he is sure of future success. "I'm really happy to have signed a new contract, looking forward to the future!" the defender wrote on his official Instagram account.

"If you look at the Training Centre, the young squad, the new stadium coming through - the club is in a great place and as long as we stick together, everything is looking very exciting. There is a great core here of young players and even the likes of Christian, Erik, Kyle and Danny are all still young. We have a young team, a core of young English players and young players in general and there is such a great future for the club," he added, as quoted on Tottenham's official site.
