Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed the club are interested in signing Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches.

Chiriches helped his side to the Romanian title last season and scored against Chelsea as Steaua reached the last 16 stage of the Europa League.

Spurs sold Steven Caulker earlier this summer to Cardiff City and William Gallas was released while Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson and Jan Vertonghen all have a littered injury history.

"Vlad Chiriches, there is an interest in the player," said Villas-Boas said after Tottenham's 1-0 win over Swansea City. "Maybe somebody steals him as well!

"I'm telling you we have looked to strengthen our backline with the departure of Steven Caulker, last year we had Younes [Kaboul] injured for the season but we had five, so we are looking for the position and we are going to go ahead with our re-strengthening."

Steaua boss Laurentiu Reghecampf has confirmed that there is a deal in place for Tottenham to sign Chiriches but the club hope their star defender will stay until after their Champions League play off second leg against Legia Warsaw.

"The two clubs have agreed to transfer him. I'm very happy for him," he said.

"I can not say the amount for which (he was) transferred, but it is very high. It will be the most expensive transfer in the history of Steaua.

"The owner says that all there is left to do is sign some documents. We hope he will help us Tuesday night if he can."

While Tottenham appear on the brink of agreeing their fifth signing of the summer, the future of Gareth Bale appears no closer to a resolution, despite reports suggesting the Welshman is in Spain to finalise his move to Real Madrid.
