Jan Vertonghen has admitted that he is flattered by the possibility of making a move to Tottenham next season, with the defender currently considering his future with Ajax.

Vertonghen has spoken in the past about making a move to a club that can provide Champions League action, with Ajax currently in the Europa League.

And as Tottenham continue to be connected to the Belgium international, Vertognhen has admitted that he would love to play for the club that look very likely to be in the top-tier European tournament next season.

"I think Tottenham are an amazing club and you see how well they are doing this season," Vertonghen told Goal.com.

"They are in the top three in England and that's where I want to play.

"I can't say anything about whether there has been contact about a transfer but I think my game can be suited to English football.

"I love the atmosphere and it has the best players in the world, it breathes football. It's one of my goals to play in the best leagues and against the best players. It's the only competition I watch apart from Barcelona."

Tottenham suffered a setback in the Premier League over the weekend, losing to Arsenal 5-2 on Sunday. And Harry Redknapp admitted after the match that the side would need to work on their defensive line up as the season hits the business end.

"I wanted to get to half-time (at 2-0) but I felt they were creating chances and we looked a bit open really," he said after the match.

"It was a difficult one. I felt at half-time I needed to try to thicken us up a little bit."

Redknapp added that he felt the defence should have picked up after half time, saying: "That should have happened, but didn't. We didn't defend well. It was basic, really."

With this in mind, news that Vertonghen might make a move to Tottenham will no doubt be a boost to Redknapp as he starts to plan for the summer. And the 24 year old says that playing in the Premier League is definitely a goal of his in the hopes of furthering his career.

"A lot of my colleagues from the national team play here and some are calling me to come," he explained.

"It's a beautiful competition, the best in my opinion. I hope one day I can play in the Premier League with this atmosphere.

"To play for a team in the Premier League would be amazing and that's what I am going for.

"It's flattering to be linked with clubs, the rumours give me confidence but I just try to do my best every game."
