British actor and film director, Lord Richard Attenborough, acclaimed for his award winning film, Gandhi, has died at the age of 90, his son told BBC today (24 August).

Lord Attenborough was best known as a director for Gandhi, which won him two Oscars. He has also appeared in several films, including The Great Escape, 10 Rillington Place, Miracle on 34th Street and Jurassic Park.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media since the news of his death broke this evening.

Prime Minister David Cameron lead the tributes followed by the The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the Chelsea Football Club. Lord Richard Attenborough was the Life President at the club's stadium, Stamford Bridge.

Lord Attenborough is survived by his wife Sheila Sim, his son, and his brother, broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.
