A horrific fuel tanker explosion in Saudi Arabia has killed at least 22 people and injured 111. The truck careered out of control this morning at around 7am, and hit part of a bridge in the capital, Riyadh causing a fireball to rip through nearby buildings and cars.
These were the chaotic scenes as several ambulances got stuck in the morning rush hour trying to reach the blast site. The building - which was the base for Zahid Tractor, a distributor of heavy machinery -.was pretty much wiped out in the blast except for one corner of the building. Fire-fighters battled to douse the flames with additional help from special water tanks from the civil defence unit. The extraordinary sight of mangled wreckage, crushed metal and huge piles of rubble left behind after numerous buildings and vehicles were caught up in the explosion led to crowds of onlookers. Over a hundred emergency services staff and volunteers are now tasked with sweeping the area for any survivors within the rubble and so officials say that - at this stage - the death toll is expected to rise. There also seems no evidence to suggest at the moment that this was an act of terrorism.
