KEY POINTS

  • Luiz left Chelsea and signed for PSG in 2014 and rejoined the Blues on the deadline day.
  • The Brazilian spent two seasons with the Ligue 1 champions.

Chelsea have re-signed David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain on the deadline day of the summer transfer window. The central defender returned to Stamford Bridge, two years after joining the Ligue 1 champions in 2014.

The 29-year-old was instrumental in the heart of the French club's back four during his time in Paris. He helped them win two league titles, while also eliminating the west London club from the Champions League in the knockout stages.

Following the arrival of new coach Unai Emery, Luiz has fallen down the pecking order at Parc des Princes, which saw him leave PSG on the deadline day. The Brazil international will play under Chelsea's new manager Antonio Conte, who also added Marcos Alonso to his squad on 31 August.

Alonso arrived at Stamford Bridge from Fiorentina and has signed a five-year deal with the Blues. The arrival of the full-back and Luiz will strengthen Chelsea's back four and also provide more options for the former Juventus manager during the team selection.

John Terry and Gary Cahill are the two first choice centre-backs in the squad, along with Kurt Zouma. Terry is in the twilight of his career and Conte has looking to bring in a player to provide more cover in that position. This has seen Chelsea bring Luiz back to the club.

If you'd have told us a year ago that Leicester would win the League, Mourinho would manage Man Utd and David Luiz would be back ..
