9:40: No goals in this contest, then. Besiktas demonstrated enough tonight to suggest Arsenal will be wary of conceding an early goal at the Emirates last week. They will also be missing the influence of Aaron Ramsey who will be suspended after being sent off for too clear bookable offences. Arsene Wenger will remain confident of securing a place for the group stage draw of this competition next Friday, but it won't be as easy as in previous years.

FULL TIME

Besiktas 0-0 Arsenal

Napoli 1-1 Athletic Bilbao

FC Copenhagen 2-3 Bayer Leverkusen

Red Bull Salzburg 2-1 Malmo FF

Steaua Bucharest 1-0 Ludogorets Razgrad

9:38: Besiktas have a couple of chances to work the ball into the Arsenal box from deep positions but on both occasions they hit the ball too long, much to Slaven Bilic's frustration.

9:36: Tomas Rosicky is one for the final few minutes, replacing Cazorla. Four minutes of added time to go.

9:35: Now Oxlade-Chamberlain gets away with one! The midfielder cheaply loses possession 30 yards out from his own goal but Besiktas fail to work anything from it.

9:33: An oustanding save from Tolga denies Oxlade-Chamberlain! The Arsenal midfielder shows excellent skill as he jinks past his man cutting in from the right before opening up his body to curl one inside the far post, but the Besiktas shot stopper manages to push it onto the post. The loose ball threatens to fall to Flamini but the home side manage to clear their lines.

9:31: Former Fulham misfit Kerim Frei is on for the final five minutes.

9:29: But a series of poor decisions allows Arsenal to regroup and the chance is gone.

9:28: Chamberlain has a corner that he whips into the box but his effort evades every one of his teammates. Besiktas break...

9:27: About eight minutes of normal time left here. This will be a slightly trickier period for the Gunners to navigate through now.

9:25: Arsenal are down to 10 men. Ramsey tries to skip around Oğuzhan just inside the Turkish half but looses the ball and hauls down his man as he nips past him. That silly booking earlier in this half has cost him. The ref has no hesitation and Ramsey walks.

RED CARD - Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal)

9:24: Santi Cazorla steps up and drives one through the wall! It takes a bounce in front of the goalkeeper but Tolga reads it well and gathers at the second time of asking.

9:22: Monreal has his legs clipped right on the edge of the box and the Gunners have a brilliant chance to score here.

9:19: Flamini and Pektemek square up after a coming together between Motta and Ramsey. The Besiktas full back appeared to catch the Welshman with his knee and it momentarily threatened to kick off before referee Milorad Mazic calmed it all down.

9:16: Alexis Sanchez has often been Arsenal's most dangerous player this evening but his evening is over as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain comes onto replace the Chilean.

9:14: Elsewhere in Europe Gonzalo Higuain has made it Napoli 1-1 Athletic Bilbao with a brilliant individual effort. Red Bull Salzburg have also doubled their lead against Malmo FFC and lead 2-0 on the night.

9:12: Arsenal almost manage to work something for themselves on the counter with Debuchy making a brilliant surging run down the right. Alexis receives the ball in field from Ramsey and dinks the ball out to the Frenchman but his driven ball across goal evades Giroud. Monreal chases down the loose ball but is penalised.

9:10: Besiktas have the chance to launch the resulting free kick into the box but it comes to nothing.

9:09: Monreal is penalised for a late lunge on Mustafa. The Spaniard was never going to get to that ball first and becomes the third Arsenal player to enter the book.

9:03: Half an hour to play in Turkey. That series of yellow cards inside three minutes sufficiently stopped that blistering start to the half, although the contest is still fairly open.

9:00: And another yellow card has been flashed, this time for Mathieu Flamini, whose not long on the pitch after replacing Mikel Arteta who had to hobble off.

8:58: Ramsey this time picks up a yellow card for another cynical one just inside the Besiktas half.

8:56: There's a brilliant pace yet again to the start of this half. More intricate stuff from the home side as Olcay and Mustafa try to work an opening but Arsenal manage to nick the ball away. Alexis leads the counter but is cynically hauled down by Motta who is shown a yellow card.

8:54: Ba brilliantly gathers a ball on the edge of the box that was pinged into his feet but then attempts an audacious chip that is charged down by Chambers at the first time of asking.

8:51: What a chance for Besiktas! Arsenal lose the ball in midfield allowing the home side to spray a neat ball out to Olcay. Cutting in from the left, he easily slides past Koscielny who sold him self far too early, but his curled effort creeps just outside the far post.

8:49: Another early chance in this half as a horrible error from Besiktas allows Giroud to slide Ramsey in. The Welshman takes a touch when rifling it on goal first time may have been the better option and has possession stolen off him!

8:47: And Arsenal get us back underway for the second half.

HALF TIME

Besiktas 0-0 Arsenal

Napoli 0-1 Athletic Bilbao

FC Copenhagen 2-3 Bayer Leverkusen

Red Bull Salzburg 1-0 Malmo FF

Steaua Bucharest 0-0 Ludogorets Razgrad

8:33: And a late chance for Arsenal! Ramsey dinks a superb ball over fir Giroud but the Frenchman can't can't connect with it. And that's half time.

8:30: Demba Ba spurns a great chance for Besiktas! Calum Chambers makes his first error of the evening and his caught too far up the pitch, allowing Ba to race onto the ball. Laurent Koscielny is still ahead of him but the former Chelsea striker has enough space to shape and shoot from the edge of the area, but drives his effort wide. Big chance.

8:28: Athletic Bilbao have a huge away goal through Iker Munian, who picks his spot from 12 yards having been teed up from the right.

Goal! Napoli 0-1 Athletic Bilbao (Iker Munian, 42)

8:25: Jack Wilshere picks the ball up about 25 yards out from goal, darts past his marker but his decent effort on goal doesn't have quite enough curl on it and the goalkeeper saves.

8:21: Demba Ba gallops into the box from the left but he takes a poor touch that Chambers reads excellently to intercept.

8:19: We've passed the half hour mark in our round of first leg games. Elsewhere this evening Red Bull Salzburg have taken a goal lead against Malmo FF, while it is currently two apiece between FC Copenhagen and Bayer Leverkusen.

8:17: They opt for a more intricate approach from the set piece however, resulting in some neat work from Pektemek who plays the ball back to Kavlak to lash an effort on goal from the edge of the box. It;s straight as Szszensy, however.

8:16: Moments later Chambers is penalised for a challenge on Ba, allowing the home side to pile players into the box.

8:14: Besiktas nearly work an opening from the right as a cute reverse ball across goal slips through the legs of Monreal, forcing Chambers to step across and avert the danger. Pektemek goes down after the challenge from teenage centre half but the referee ignores the appeals for a penalty, which mostly come from the crowd.

8:10: Excellent again from Arsenal. Ramsey lifts a raking through ball over to Giroud just on tht edge of the box. The Frenchman's touch is excellent and is able to work the ball around his man before clipping it over for Alexis at the far post, but the Chilean isn't tall enough to reach it.

8:08: Giroud is looking sharp this evening as he nips away from his man but a bright exchange with Alexis breaks down due to some better covering defence from Besiktas and the dodgy pitch.

8:05: Arsenal have recovered well from a couple of early scares. Alexis's speed and intricate dribbles down the right and now causing Besiktas one or two headaches. Aaron Ramsey comes alive for the first time in his contest to complete a clever turn in the box before finding Monreal but the Spaniard's cross into the box isn't a good one.

8:02: Girioud wins the ball on the half way line and slides it out to Alexis again who dances down the right flank. He easily drags the ball past his marker and sprints for the byline but a covering defender just about cuts the ball out for a corner. Arsenal fail to work anything from it.

8:00: And another chance for Arsenal! Motta is caught dallying on the edge of his own box and Alexis is on the ball in a flash. He slides it to Cazorla who changes direction quickly and dances past his marker inside the right of the box, but his driven effort across goal drifts harmlessly wide. Great opening, here.

7:58: Sanchez picks up the ball on the counter and drives down the inside left channel. The Chilean cuts inside and slides the ball across goal to Giroud, but the Frenchman can't take the ball under control at the first time of asking and Besiktas manage to clear.

7:57: Another wonderful effort from Ba! Esran floats an inviting ball across the box from the right that Ba meets from a tight angle on the volley. He tries to steer it into the far corner but Szczesny is equal to it and makes the save

7:55: Mustafa threatens to drive at the back-peddling Arsenal defence but Jack Wilshere nips back and just manages to scoop the ball away with a sliding challenge.

7:52: Opening seven or so minutes has seen little from Arsenal so far as the home side relentlessly hunt them across the pitch. Alexis Sanchez is easily shunted off the ball by Ozyakup and moments after a through ball intended for Olivier Giroud is taken away by a black shirt.

7:49: Arsenal appear slightly shaken after that early Ba effort. Szczesny is forced off his line to charge down a hopeful through ball.

7:47: Stunning effort from Besiktas! Straight from kick off Demba Ba launches an outrageous effort on goal that Szczesny just about manages to keep out! It may have taken a touch off the bar too/ Sublime effort.

7:46: Besiktas, dressed all in black, get us off and underway.

7:44: Both teams are out on the pitch at the Besiktas Inönü and kick off is imminent.

7:40: Kick off is nearly upon us but here's some breaking transfer news to bring to you. Sporting Lisbon have confirmed Marcos Rojo is set to complete his move to Manchester United with Luis Nani returning to the Portuguese club on a season long loan.
