Everybody knows a good haircut can transform your face, but for someone living on the street, a good haircut can make you feel like a new person as well as change people's perception of you immediately.
Former musician and hairdresser Joshua Coombes, 29, from Clapham, south London has made this a possibility by offering haircuts to homeless people as part of his project Haircuts For The Homeless that feeds into a greater call to action for people to #DoSomethingForNothing.
Coombes trained as a hairdresser five years ago and began his street-level salon by chance when he walked past a homeless person and offered to help them on a whim.
Speaking to The Huffington Post, he said: "It just happened one day. I had all my gear on me and I was walking past somebody who was homeless and it went from there, really. It was a light-bulb moment in my head and I was like − this is an amazing way to connect with people."
Now, Coombes gives regular haircuts to the homeless, taking time to get to know each person he meets, as well as recording their transformation on Instagram with the help of his photographer friend, Matt Spracklen.
The wider campaign for people to "Do Something For Nothing" was created by the two of them alongside Dave Burt, CEO of digital media agency Be Social Global who also posts on a separate Instagram account.
On 9 July, the trio had an official London launch for the movement, with the vision that "if everyone, in every city, did one thing for nothing, we could change the world. We're not raising awareness, we're raising compassion. We're not calling people out, we're calling you in, to love on your communities, all over the world." People were encouraged to document their acts of kindness with the hashtag #DoSomethingForNothing and to continue to engage with the campaign.
The concept is so simple but the small acts of kindness by Coombes and company to improve the lives of those living on the street and simply acknowledge a person rather than walking past is extremely powerful and the difference a haircut can make is incredible.
