A teenager has been arrested after a man is alleged to have been raped in the toilets of a Manchester department store. Police were called shortly after 11.30am on Friday (11 March) after receiving reports of the alleged attack in the toilets of the Next store in the Arndale Centre.

A man in his fifties complained he was attacked in the toilets of the store, which was busy with customers at the time. The suspect was detained by security staff, who held him until police arrived at the scene.

The 19 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape and was taken into custody, where he is currently being questioned by detectives.

Greater Manchester Police have described it as a 'shocking' incident, but thanked staff for their swift response.

Detective Sergeant Chris Maddocks from GMP's Serious Sexual Crimes Unit said: "This was an incredibly shocking incident which happened in a busy store. Our specialist officers are with the victim and will ensure he has all the support he needs. We would like thank the staff at Next and the Arndale Centre, we have a man in custody and it is thanks to their swift action."

The suspect has since been released on bail pending further enquiries. The alleged victim is currently receiving support from specialist officers.
