A man has been arrested at Gatwick Airport for Syria-related terrorism offences moments before he was about to board a flight. Officers from West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit detained the 24-year-old man on Monday (4 April).

Searches are being carried out at two addresses in Birmingham in relation to the arrest. A 20-year-old woman was also arrested at an address in west London for similar offences related to Syria.

"The two are being held at a police station in the West Midlands. There was no risk to any passengers at Gatwick Airport or to the wider public in relation to these arrests," A West Midlands Police statement said.

Terror arrests in the region jumped from 12 in 2014 to 23 last year making it the part of the country with the second highest counter terrorism arrests outside London.
