Counter-terrorism police have arrested a Leicester woman at Birmingham Airport on suspicion of plotting to travel to Syria with her three children.

The 30-year-old woman was arrested was arrested at Birmingham Airport by officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit at 9.40am on 29 July.

She is accused of preparing to travel to Syria to engage in terrorist acts and was with three children when she was arrested.

The woman's home address, as well as another associated address, are currently being searched and officers are working with partner agencies to ensure the children's welfare is safeguarded.

A police statement read: "[The woman] was arrested under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act. Officers made the arrest under [Police and Criminal Evidence Act] legislation, meaning they have a maximum of 36 hours to question the suspect before charging, releasing, bailing or applying to a court for a warrant of further detention."
