The US Open enters its ninth day of excitement as the top seeds try to battle their way into the quarter finals of the last Grand Slam event of the season.

London 2012 gold-medallist Andy Murray was in action on the day, where he beat 15th seed Milos Raonic of Canada 6-4 6-4 6-2 to qualify for the last eight. Day 8 also saw the withdrawal of 23rd seed Mardy Fish before his game against the world number one Roger Federer. The Swiss, fresh from his 17th Grand Slam win at the Wimbledon in July, was given a free ride into the qurters after his American opponent failed to feature owing to health reasons.

In the women's singles, Wimbledon and Olympic champion Serena Williams produced a ruthless display of her title credentials by defeating Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic 6-0 6-0 to reach her 10th US Open quarter final. Meanwhile, the upset of the day was provided by 20th seed Roberta Vinci of Italy who beat second seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-1 6-4. In the women's doubles, hometown favourites Serena and Venus Williams sisters were knocked out by Russian fourth seeds Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova. The unseeded German-Chinese pair of Sabine Lisicki and Shuai Peng pulled off an upset beating the sixth seeded Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina to labour into the quarters.

In the men's singles, world number two Novak Djokovic of Serbia takes on 18th seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland for a berth in the quarters. Djokovic, who is going through a grey patch, is looking to improve his form and challenge Federer for the top spot. Meanwhile, local boy Andy Roddick - who has announced his retirement after this tournament - will play his fourth round match against seventh seed Argentine Juan Martin del Potro. In another battle for a place in the last eight, fourth seed David Ferrer of Spain will face 13th seed Richard Gasquet of France.

Maria Sharapova

In the women's singles, top seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus will take on defending champion Samantha Stosur of Australia in a high-profile quarter final clash. Meanwhile, third seed Maria Sharapova will face Marion Bartoli of France for a place in the semi- finals. The Russian, who was knocked out in the fourth round of the Wimbledon in July, will be looking to make up for that failure.
