The Holy See has announced that late popes John Paul II and John XXIII will be made saints this year.

A Vatican spokesman said the Pope had approved decrees clearing the way for both popes to be declared saints on the same day.

He will convoke a consistory of cardinals to decide the date of the canonisations.

Pope Francis approved a second miracle attributed to the Polish pontiff Karol Wojtyła, who reigned from 1978 to 2005 as John Paul II. John XXII, born Angelo Roncalli, led the Catholic Church from 1958-63 and will be canonised even without having a miracle to his credit.
