Sci-fi TV drama Extant (with Steven Spielberg as executive producer and starring Halle Berry), returns with its second season on 1 July and the show's creator promises an "edgier, a little sexier, and action-packed" season 2.
Extant season 2's premiere episode is titled Change Scenario and it picks up six months post the ending of season 1. However, the show's creator and EP Mickey Fisher claims that the new season will be launched in such a way that viewers who have not seen season 1 at all, will have no trouble picking up the story.
"We wanted to launch this season in a way that new viewers could jump right in with Season 2," Fisher told TV Guide. "You don't have to have seen the whole Season 1 or any of Season 1. Within the first couple minutes of this episode, you'll be up to speed on everything. We really wanted to do that as a way to invite new viewers into the show for this season."
The official synopsis for Extant season 2, episode 1 reads, "Six months after her life unravelled and dark secrets were revealed, Molly (Halle Berry) is confined to a psychiatric hospital when she learns of bizarre deaths that sound eerily similar to those she witnessed in space. When she escapes to investigate, she crosses paths with JD Richter (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a determined cop who just signed on to the case."
Meanwhile, showrunner Elizabeth Kruger teases a major turning point involving Molly's alien offspring in the season 2 premiere, which will send the narrative in a direction no one will see coming, reports TV Guide.
"There's a definite connection [from] the offspring arriving on earth to the story that happens in Season 2. It is a catalyst for the story of season 2, for sure," she said. "But whatever it is you're thinking about what that story's going to be, it's going to be something entirely different."
Extant season 2, episode 1, Change Scenario airs on Wednesday, 1 July at 10pm ET on CBS.
