Gears of War 4
An ugly new beastie from the Gears of War 4 gameplay video. Microsoft

Gears of War 4 was one of the most widely-expected announcements at an E3 full of huge surprises. Which isn't to say it didn't arrive in an unexpected fashion. Many expected a CG trailer but what we got was five minutes of gameplay.

That gameplay showed off new characters, a new enemy and a different tone to the first game - and now you can watch it all in 4K UltraHD thanks to YouTube user Griga Devgamekit. You can watch the gameplay trailer below...

Gears of War 4 will arrive exclusively on Xbox One in late 2016, five years after Epic Games concluded their original trilogy in what proved to be their last game before Microsoft acquired the series rights.

Now The Coalition, formerly Black Tusk Studios, is in charge and Gears of War 4 will be their first foray into the world of Marcus Fenix, the Locust and the planet of Sera.... not that any of those things are confirmed to make an appearance. Right now all we know is what we see in the trailer above.

The original Gears was released in 2006, forming part of a collection of new IPs, alongside Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect, that helped establish Microsoft's Xbox 360 as the market leader last generation after Sony botched the initial launch of PS3.

Gears near-perfected the cover-based third person shooter, surrounding its robust gameplay mechanics with larger-than-life characters and a bonkers action plot ripped straight out of the fever dreams of a 1980s Hollywood producer pondering ideas for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
