Overview

West Indies lead the three-game T20 series 1-0 after registering a 27-run victory over England in the first match on Sunday.

The hosts lost three wickets in total as Marlon Samuels remained unbeaten to smash a half-century.

The right-handed batsman scored 69 runs in 46 balls to power his side to a total of 170 runs in 20 overs in the opening innings.

Ravi Bopara was responsible for the dismissal of Lendl Simmons (3) and Dwayne Smith (27), while James Tredwell nabbed the crucial wicket of Chris Gayle (43) in the 12th over.

Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad were economically costliest having conceded 30 and 26 runs respectively in the two overs bowled by each bowler.

Chasing a target of 171 runs, England failed to stamp their mark on the game as Samuel Badree tore through their top order. Alex Hales (3) was his first victim in the third ball of the third over while Luke Wright (0) fell in the next delivery to put the leg spinner on a hat-trick.

Despite being unsuccessful in claiming a hat-trick, Badree struck again in the seventh over to dismiss Michael Lumb (18). At 36, with the loss of three wickets, everything was downhill for the visitors. Bopara and Tim Bresnan were the top scorers for England with 42 and 47 runs respectively.

The visitors ran out of overs with 143 runs on the board having lost nine wickets. Samuels took two wickets, while Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine got one each.

Eoin Morgan will be taking over as captain in Broad's absence and will be hoping to ensure that his nation do not suffer a defeat in the series.
