Creator Peter Nowalk spoke to TV Guide and admitted that Frank's whereabouts will be revealed in episode 1. "You'll find out in the first episode. We're not going to drag it out. Frank is a big mystery for us for much of the season, but not in terms of not knowing his whereabouts. He is a big part of Season 3," Nowalk said.

According to the showrunner, season 3 will focus on personal relationships. He said, "I think the main thing is, everything is very personal this season. Annalise has allies but also enemies. We're focusing on all of the relationships and really digging into the psychological struggle of the characters."

Nowalk also teased a "game-changing" twist at the end of episode 1. "You should definitely watch 'til the end [of the premiere]. It impacts everyone and it's the most game-changing one yet for the show," he added.

Previously, Viola Davis teased an "unbelievable mystery" while attending ABC's summer TCA party. She said that "a mystery is going to be revealed in the first episode that is so big and so unbelievable I just think it's going to cost everyone something."
