A new Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 build is now making its way through Lumia devices on preview for developers.

The build, which is expected to be an incremental software version over the last developer preview release, was spotted on WPBench a couple of days ago.

Now the update is live with build version 8.10.14219.341 for developers. To check the availability of the update head over to Settings>> Phone Update>> Check for Updates.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 (8.10.14219.341) Changelog

The most visible change noticed in this update is the Mobile Data toggle, which can now be set in the notification centre. The update also brings Alpha Cortana for France, Italy, Germany and Spain. Finally, there are bug fixes in the version, reports NokiaPowerUser.

Marcus Ash, group program manager for Cortana on Window Phone, has announced that along with the new update to Windows Phone Developer Preview Program, Cortana as an alpha will be available in aforementioned countries.

"Alpha means that Cortana is new to these countries, most of the features in the beta version are available but some are missing or coming soon. For example, flight tracking is not available at this time for alpha. Transit data is currently limited to larger cities and will expand as we have more data. Additionally, reference data (eg "How tall is Mt. Everest") is also not available – but we're working hard to enable this soon!" according to the release note at Windows blog.

How to set up Cortana for France, Italy, Germany or Spain

  • First update your phone. There are two different ways to do this:
  1. Ensure that you have Windows Phone 8.1 Update (OS version 8.10.14219.341 or later) installed on your phone. Check to see which version you have and find out if an update is available.
  2. Install the update through the Windows Phone Preview for Developers. This program makes updates available to anyone who's interested in getting the new Windows Phone updates on their phones earlier than the general public.

  • Once you have installed the update, go to Cortana by pressing the Search button
  • When prompted, review and accept the conditions on the two Cortana acknowledgment screens.
