A man has been arrested after two young children and a woman were found dead at a house in Stoke-on-Trent.

Police were called to an incident at the address Sherwin Road, Stanfields on 12 October. When they arrived, they discovered the bodies of the woman and two children who were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to neighbours, the three had been stabbed to death. Matthew Houghton, 30, told the Stoke Sentinel: "My brother said he heard a woman screaming, that someone was being killed, so we ran up the street.

"She was hysterical, saying they were all dead, that they'd all been stabbed.

"She'd been in the house and seen it."

A man was arrested in connection to the incident and is speaking to detectives. Staffordshire Police said a forensic examination has already commenced and officers will remain at the scene "for some considerable time".

Chief Supt Martin Evans from Staffordshire Police said: "We understand the local community are both shocked and saddened by this tragic incident.

"We recognise the community's need for information, however it is important not to speculate and let our detectives conduct their detailed investigation to establish the full facts.

"Local officers will maintain a visible presence in our community to support the investigation and the local community affected."
