Wrestler Finn Balor's record-setting reign as WWE NXT champion has come to an end after Samoa Joe defeated The Demon at the WWE NXT live event in Lowell, Massachusetts on 21 April. Balor retained his title for a record 292 days, surpassing Neville's record set in 2014 by five days. He had won the title from Kevin Owens at the Tokyo event on 4 July 2015.

According to Wrestling Inc, Balor may have suffered an ankle injury during the match. Multiple fans who witnessed the fight have claimed the wrestler rolled his left ankle and when he tried to get back up on his feet, he was clearly in pain. As of now, it is unclear as to how badly the wrestler is injured.

Minutes later, Joe carried out his signature muscle buster move on The Demon from one of the corners of the top ropes. The referee made the three count but The Demon did not recover from the deadly move. Samoa Joe made his debut on NXT on 20 May 2015.

The official WWE Twitter handle announced the winner of the NXT championship match. The tweet read: "Introducing the new @WWENXT Champion, @SamoaJoe! #NXTLowell."

Soon after Joe was crowned the new NXT champion, 14-time WWE world heavyweight champion Triple H congratulated him via Twitter: Triple H wrote: "Anything can happen @WWENXT...anywhere...anytime."

The former NXT women's champion Bayley also applauded Joe for his win against Balor. Bayley wrote on Twitter: "Congratulations @SamoaJoe! My heart exploded along with every fan at #NXTLowell tonight! What a cool moment to be a part of.#NXT "
